Did Jesus Start a Church?

(emphasis added to texts.)

Matthew 16:18 - And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 18:17 - And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.

Acts 5:9 - And Peter said unto her: Why have you agreed together to tempt the spirit of the Lord? Behold the feet of them who have buried thy husband are at the door: and they shall carry thee out, 10 Immediately, she fell down before his feet and gave up the ghost. And the young men coming in found her dead: and carried her out and buried her by her husband. 11 And there came great fear upon the whole church and upon all that heard these things. Acts 8 1 And at that time, there was raised a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem. And they were all dispersed through the countries of Judea, and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men took order for Stephen's funeral and made great mourning over him. 3 But Saul made havock of the church, entering in from house to house: and dragging away men and women, committed them to prison.

Acts 9:31 - Now, the church had peace throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria: and was edified, walking in the fear of the Lord: and was filled with the consolation o the Holy Ghost. 32 And it came to pass that Peter, as he passed through, visiting all, came to the saints who dwelt at Lydda.

Acts 11:21 - And the hand of he Lord was with them: and a great number believing, were converted to the Lord. 22 And the tidings came to the ears of the church that was at Jerusalem, touching these things: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch. 23 Who, when he was come and had seen the grace of God, rejoiced. And he exhorted them all with purpose of heart to continue in the Lord. 25 And Barnabas went to Tarsus to seek Saul: whom, when he had found, he brought to Antioch. 26 And they conversed there in the church a whole year: and they taught a great multitude, so that at Antioch the disciples were first named Christians.

Acts 12:1 - And at the same time, Herod the king stretched forth his hands, to afflict some of the church. 2 And he killed James, the brother of John, With the sword. 3 And seeing that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to take up Peter also. Now it was in the days of the Azymes. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.

Acts 13:1 - Now there were in the church which was at Antioch prophets and doctors, among whom was Barnabas and Simon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene and Manahen who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 And as they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Ghost said to them: Separate me Saul and Barnabas, for the work whereunto I have taken them.

Acts 14:22 - And when they had ordained to them priests in every church and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed. 25 And thence they sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been delivered to the grace of God, unto the work which they accomplished. 26 And when they were come and had assembled the church, they related what great things God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Acts 15:1 - And some, coming down from Judea, taught the brethren: That, except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses, you cannot be saved. 2 And when Paul and Barnabas had no small contest with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of the other side should go up to the apostles and priests to Jerusalem, about this question. 3 They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through Phenice and Samaria, relating the conversion of the Gentiles. And they caused great joy to all the brethren. 4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and by the apostles and ancients, declaring how great things God had done with them. 22 Then it pleased the apostles and ancients, with the whole church, to choose men of their own company and to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas, who was surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren.

Acts 18: 22 - And going down to Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and saluted the church: and so came down to Antioch. 23 And after he had spent some time there, he departed and went through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, in order, confirming all the disciples.

Romans 16:1 - And I commend to you Phebe, our sister, who is in the ministry of the church, that is in Cenchrae: 2 That you receive her in the Lord as becometh saints and that you assist her in whatsoever business she shall have need of you. For she also hath assisted many, and myself also. 3 Salute Prisca and Aquila, my helpers, in Christ Jesus 4 (Who have for my life laid down their own necks: to whom not I only give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles), 5 And the church which is in their house. Salute Epenetus, my beloved: who is the firstfruits of Asia in Christ. 6 Salute Mary, who hath laboured much among you. 23 Caius, my host, and the whole church saluteth you. Erastus, the treasurer of the city, saluteth you: and Quartus, a brother.

1 Corinthians 1:1 - Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes a brother, 2 To the church of God that is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that invoke the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place of theirs and ours.

1 Corinthians 4:16 - Wherefore, I beseech you, be ye followers of me as I also am of Christ. 17 For this cause have I sent to you Timothy, who is my dearest son and faithful in the Lord. Who will put you in mind of my ways, which are in Christ Jesus: as I teach every where in every church. 1 Corinthians 6 He blames them for going to law before unbelievers. 1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to be judged before the unjust: and not before the saints? 2 Know you not that the saints shall judge this world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Know you not that we shall judge angels? How much more things of this world? 4 If therefore you have judgments of things pertaining to this world, set them to judge who are the most despised in the church.

1 Corinthians 10:31 - Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatsoever else you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Be without offence to the Jew, and to the Gentiles and to the church of God: 33 As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself but to many: that they may be saved.

1 Corinthians 11:15 - But if a woman nourish her hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the church of God. 17 Now this I ordain: not praising you, that you come together, not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all I hear that when you come together in the church, there are schisms among you. And in part I believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies: that they also, who are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When you come therefore together into one place, it is not now to eat the Lord's supper. 21 For every one taketh before his own supper to eat. And one indeed is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What, have you no houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? Do I praise you? In this I praise you not. 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread, 24 And giving thanks, broke and said: Take ye and eat: This is my body, which shall be delivered for you. This do for the commemoration of me.

1 Corinthians 12:25 - That there might be no schism in the body: but the members might be mutually careful one for another. 26 And if one member suffer any thing, all the members suffer with it: or if one member glory, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and members of member. 28 And God indeed hath set some in the church: first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors: after that miracles: then the graces of healings, helps, governments, kinds of tongues, interpretations, of speeches. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all doctors? 30 Are all workers of miracles? Have all the grace of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But be zealous for the better gifts. And I shew unto you yet a more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 14 (about speaking in tongues) 4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself: but he that prophesieth, edifieth the church. 5 And I would have you all to speak with tongues, but rather to prophesy. For greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues: unless perhaps he interpret, that the church may receive edification. 12 So you also, forasmuch as you are zealous of spirits, seek to abound unto the edifying of the church. 19 But in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct others also: than ten thousand words in a tongue. 23 If therefore the whole church come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in unlearned persons or infidels, will they not say that you are mad? 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him hold his peace in the church and speak to himself and to God. 35 But if they would learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church.

1 Corinthians 15:9 - For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

1 Corinthians 16:9 - The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house, with whom I also lodge.

Galatians 1:13 - For you have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews'religion: how that, beyond measure, I persecuted the church of God and wasted it.

Ephesians 1:20 - Which he wrought in Christ, raising him up from the dead and setting him on his right hand in the heavenly places. 21 Above all principality and power and virtue and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come. 22 And he hath subjected all things under his feet and hath made him head over all the church, 23 Which is his body and the fulness of him who is filled all in all.

Ephesians 3:10 - That the manifold wisdom of God may be made known to the principalities and powers in heavenly places through the church, 21 To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, unto all generations, world without end. Amen.

Ephesians 5:23 - Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the church and delivered himself up for it: 27 That he might present it to himself, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as also Christ doth the church: 30 Because we are members of him, body, of his flesh and of 32 This is a great sacrament: but I speak in Christ and in the church.

Philipians 3:6 - According to zeal, persecuting the church of God: According to the justice that is in the law, conversing without blame.

Philipians 4:15 - And you also know, O Philippians, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but you only.

Colossians 1 (Mystical Nature of the church )18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he may hold the primacy: 19 Because in him, it hath well pleased the Father that all fulness should dwell: 23 If so ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and immoveable from the hope of the gospel which you have heard, which is preached in all the creation that is under heaven: whereof I Paul am made a minister. 24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:

Colossians 4:5 - Salute the brethren who are at Laodicea: and Nymphas and the church that is in his house. 16 And when this epistle shall have been read with you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans: and that you read that which is of the Laodiceans.

1 Thessalonians 1:1 - Paul and Sylvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians: in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Grace be to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for you all: making a remembrance of you in our prayers without ceasing,

1 Timothy 3:5 - But if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? 15 But if I tarry long: That thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

1 Timothy 5:16 - If any of the faithful have widows, let him minister to them, and let not the church be charged: that there may be sufficient for them that are widows indeed.

Hebrews 2:12 - I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I praise thee.

Hebrews 12:23 - And to the church of the firstborn who are written in the heavens, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the just made perfect,

James 5 (Last Rites in the church) 14 Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

1 Peter 5:13 - The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you. And so doth my son, Mark.

3 John 1:6 - Who have given testimony to thy charity in the sight of the church. Whom thou shalt do well to bring forward on their way in a manner worthy of God: 7 Because, for his name they went out, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such: that we may be fellow helpers of the truth. 9 I had written perhaps to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, doth not receive us. 10 For this cause, if I come, I will advertise his works which he doth, with malicious words prating against us. And as if these things were not enough for him, neither doth he himself receive the brethren: and them that do receive them he forbiddeth and casteth out of the church.

"O God,
I humbly beseech thee
to teach me thy true religion,
That leads to everlasting happiness,
through Jesus Christ thy Son,
our Lord.
Amen."
